The letter in the opening sequence emphasis's the stalker character against the young female adult character. The letter then shows the past of what has happened to the character and shows where the stalker character is at the present time. Which then moves the narrative along. Having the prision letter shows the audience the extream case of what the characters are involved in, then presenting to the audience what the storyline is about.
